My inspiration comes from the world around me. I love to be outside, whether in a village, city or out in nature. My paintings reflect this variety with a range from broad vistas to a secluded mountain stream to a village street or plaza. Many are based on my northwest US home, with scenes from the coast to the mountains and the Columbia River Gorge. Travels within the US and internationally provide additional inspiration.
I consider myself to be a painter of landscapes, whether natural or man-made. My style is more impressionistic than realistic, although some paintings drift toward a true image of what I saw. I strive to capture the feeling of the view: the grandeur of the summit or the intimacy of a medieval village street with a sidewalk café. Many are not majestic scenes, but reveal the flowing terrain or the abruptness of the natural setting. The Oregon Coast and the Columbia River Gorge are wonderful for their variety: dynamic rock formations, and powerful hills and mountains with distant vistas, playful lighting and shadows.
My brush work is loose, often mixing a variety of colors to capture the character and texture of the materials, whether a rocky cliff, autumn leaves or the dappled sunlight on a pond or stream. I am especially drawn to capture dynamic patterns, such as an explosive display of color in a sunset or the swirling water of river rapids.
